This week we caught up with Taranaki Golf CEO Peter Harold, who reveals which member of Oasis he would like to play golf with, and where he got a hole in one!
What your role in the golf industry and how did you get started?
I was made redundant after 22 years at NZ Rugby and began looking for a new opportunity. I’m now the part-time CEO of Taranaki Golf, overseeing all aspects of the organization, including accounts, marketing, communications, and HR. We have two other part-time staff who focus on running events to promote golf in schools and clubs.
I look after TGA tournaments, internal pennants and liaise with all 18 golf clubs.
What inspires you about working in the industry?
I have spent most of my career in sports, and while the goals and outcomes are similar across different codes, each sport has its own unique aspects. What truly inspires me is the incredible work that volunteers put into making our sport thrive.
What are the biggest challenges you face in growing the game of golf in Taranaki?
We operate with limited resources. While levies cover our wages, everything else relies on grants and sponsorship to keep things running.
What trends or changes do you see shaping the future of the golf industry?
With limited funding, I believe golf in New Zealand will eventually need to focus on one or two key areas and excel in those. Currently, we’re experiencing a surge in memberships, but the sport needs more opportunities to engage and invigorate youth. For example, Taranaki has no driving ranges, and building one would be a significant step forward.
If you weren’t working in the golf industry, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t in the golf industry I would be retired.
If you could play a round of golf with three people dead or alive, who would they be and why?
My dad who passed away 22 years ago, John Daly (it would be fun) and Liam Gallagher from Oasis so I’m bound not to be last.
Ever had a hole in one?
Yes at my home course Ngamotu on the 14th – par 3.
