Director of Golf at Royal Auckland & Grange Golf Club, James Betts took on the Longest Day challenge in aid of Cancer Society recently, raising more than $4,000 for the charity.

Along the way, James, who completed the endurance test with William Dykes and George Witana, kept track of their progress. The trio clocked up more than 50,000 steps, walking more than 45km. They managed the impressive four rounds of golf in 12.5 hours of playing. Not bad going for a tough course!

What’s more impressive is the team lost no golf balls, hitting a total of 303 shots, and only dropped one penalty shot.

James said: “The conditions tested us all day, with relentless wind and Auckland’s infamous rain making frequent appearances. We had a few too many putts — but my ball striking was solid!

“It was all worth it! Thanks to everyone’s incredible generosity, we’ve raised more than $4,000 for the Cancer Society.

“To everyone who donated, supported, or cheered us on — thank you. Your kindness made this marathon effort possible.”

Each year, the Longest Day invites golfers of any standard to sign up to raise money for the the cancer charity. This is an invaluable contribution as more 27,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer each year. The money raised helps fund critical support for patients, such as driving more than 1 million kilometres for treatments each year alone, and covering the costs of more than 50,000 nights of accommodation.
