Ex-All Blacks captain Richie McCaw took to the fairways recently playing alongside Aussie star Cam Smith.
McCaw was taking part in the Pro-Am tournament ahead of last week’s Australian Open in Sydney. But while the Kiwi sporting star was a hero on the rugby pitch, his skills on the course weren’t quite up to par.
When talking to media after their round, Smith was asked what he though of McCaw’s swing.
“I wouldn’t say good.”
He went on to say:
“It is amazing how athletes, really solid athletes, can manage to play all kinds of different sports,” he said.
“I could see him [McCaw] playing cricket well, I could see him playing everything well and although he didn’t have the best action, he still hit a lot of great shots which I think is the trait of a really good athlete.”
While McCaw may have some work to do on his golf game, he told 1News his round was an “awesome” experience.
“My golf wasn’t flash but a great experience,” he said.
“I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to come to the Aussie Open and play with a guy like that – he’s a hell of a nice guy to put up with idiots like me out on the golf course.”
McCaw still gave himself a passing grade for his play though.
“I started with six [balls] and still have three left so it wasn’t so bad!”
