Councillors have officially approved the development of a new 18-hole mini golf course at the EA Networks Centre in Ashburton.

The course will occupy a grassy section on the northern side of the carpark, with a project budget set at $500,000.

Mayor Neil Brown noted that the idea originated earlier this year during consultations for the EA Networks Centre masterplan.

Funding for the mini golf project has been allocated through the Reserves Contributions account, ensuring it does not impact general rates.

Concept designs for the course highlight themed holes inspired by local landmarks and features, including the Staveley Ice Rink, Mount Hutt, Lake Hood, Rakaia’s salmon sculpture, the town clock, and the area’s agricultural roots.

The design phase will incorporate accessible elements, with some holes built on level ground and others placed on small terraces along the embankment.

Players with their own equipment will be able to use the course for free, while those needing clubs and balls can rent them at a low cost from the EA Networks Centre. The design does not include a ball return feature on the final hole.

Mayor Brown and Councillor Leen Braam will work closely with staff to finalise the project’s scope and design.

Once the design phase is complete and contractors are secured, construction is expected to take 12-14 weeks to finish.
