Golf Manager's Association of New Zealand Executive Officer Des Topp with Chair Matt Owen
The Golf Manager’s Association of New Zealand has announced that Des Topp has been awarded a Life Membership in recognition of his dedication and leadership within New Zealand’s golf community. The announcement came at GMANZ’s Annual General Meeting.
Topp, who has been a member of GMANZ for the past 15 years and has led the association as Executive Officer for the past eight, said: “I am deeply honoured and humbled to be nominated for Life Membership of the Golf Managers Association of New Zealand. Looking back on my time here, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped my journey.”
GMANZ Chair Matthew Owen presented Topp with his award, and said: “It was a pleasure to present Des Topp with Life Membership at the 2024 AGM. Des has an unrivalled reputation within New Zealand’s golf community due to his work across multiple fields. Many clubs and members have benefited from his leadership at GMANZ, and it’s a testament to his dedication.”
In a recent Linkedin post, GMANZ highlighted the significant achievements Topp has overseen: growing membership from 95 to over 200 professionals, managing 25 BMI courses that have educated 160 students, and celebrating the graduation of 20 Certified Club Managers (CCMs). He has also organised five national conferences, building a strong community and fostering collaboration across the club management field.
The timing of this award aligns with Topp’s latest role in guiding the transition to the Club Managers Association of New Zealand (CMANZ), which will expand the association’s reach beyond golf to support a broader range of clubs across the country. With a background that spans multiple sports, including cricket and rugby, Topp is well-suited to be part of this new chapter.
Topp credited the collaborative efforts of the association and its partners for much of its success. “Our strong relationships with stakeholders, including Golf NZ, numerous clubs, and sponsors, have been instrumental in our achievements – I’m grateful for their unwavering support and collaboration.”
