This week we caught up with Golf Shop Manager Katie Sanson. Katie works at one of the most prestigious golf courses in New Zealand, and tells why she likes to see more girls and women getting on the course, and how she almost ended up working in the NZ Intelligence service.
What golf course do you work at, what’s your role, and how long have you been there?
I’m lucky enough to manage both North and South golf shops, the online store and merchandise at Te Arai Links. I’ve been here since the start, October 2022!
What inspired you to pursue a career in the golf industry, and how did you get started?
I have been around the golf industry for 10+ years but never thought I would end up working in it, let alone finding my dream job. I was looking for a career change after working in the finance industry for 5 years and it was very much right place, right time! I’m grateful to be able to put my love for fashion and spending money to good use.
What are the biggest challenges you see facing golf clubs?
The biggest challenge we’ve faced so far as a club in my opinion is not having any data or reporting to use to predict stock levels etc. Being such a new course, it really is trial and error, and finding out what our members and guests like, and don’t like, to buy. Year one, we almost sold out of clothes!
What trends or changes do you see shaping the future of the golf industry?
I definitely think golf is becoming more inclusive for everyone including the younger generations and especially females. It’s great to see more and more gals getting out there in such a male dominated industry. I personally love some girl golf after work! We are pretty relaxed at Te Arai Links on dress code, and I see more and more clubs starting to accept the fashion trends that are less traditional like hoodies etc. Exciting times!
If you weren’t working in the golf industry, what would you be doing?
Before I left the finance industry, I was looking at jobs in the NZ Intelligence service! But I’ve also always wanted to start my own brand one day, two very different paths so who knows. I’m happy with where I am now.
If you could play a round of golf with three people dead or alive, who would they be and why?
I struggle with this question! This is super random but let’s go with Martin Garrix, Dom Dolla and Fred Again, because I’m not really a huge fan girl of anyone in the industry but I do love my music! Not even sure if they play golf but it would be good vibes.
What’s your handicap?
26 right now. Hoping to get it under 20 this year!
Ever had a hole in one?
Not yet! Still searching.
