This week we caught up with Shandon Carter. Shandon has been a general manager for two years and reveals what he believes are the biggest challenges the golf industry is facing right now.

What golf course do you manage and how long have you been there?
Howick Golf Club, in May it will be 2 years in the job.

What inspired you to pursue a career in golf course management, and how did you get started?
I have a passion for sports and business management, I immigrated from South Africa and this was the first opportunity that came up and I landed the job a couple months later, once we arrived.

What are the biggest challenges you face in running a golf club?
People management. You deal with thousands of people every month, staff, board members and volunteers. Everyone is different and everyone has an opinion.

What trends or changes do you see shaping the future of the golf industry?
Golf simulators and practice facilities are the big trends changing the game.

If you weren’t working in the golf industry, what would you be doing?
My dream job would be to manage a premier league team. Realistically, a management role within a big business.

If you could play a round of golf with three people dead or alive, who would the be and why?
Tiger Woods, just because he’s Tiger. My Dad and grandfather who I miss very much. My Dad is still back in South Africa, while my grandfather passed away in 2016.
