Takapuna Golf Course is not taking the fight with Auckland Council lying down, sending out an EDM to members and followers of the club calling for support.
On Wednesday, an e-newsletter hit the inboxes of many of the golf course’s fans and members, asking them to join the fight and sign the petition to save the course.
The Auckland Council’s proposal threatens over half of the Takapuna Golf Course, which currently attracts 200,000 visitors annually.
The plan would transform a significant portion of the golf course into a wetland designed to capture stormwater during extreme weather events. However, golf course advocates argue there are alternative solutions that could preserve the course while addressing water management needs.
The EDM read: “Auckland Council is proposing to convert more than half of Takapuna Golf Course into wetlands, with the rest potentially earmarked for other uses. After nearly 100 years of golf at the park, and countless golfers starting their journey at Takapuna, there is no guarantee there will be any provision for the sport at this site.
As one of New Zealand’s busiest golf courses—hosting more than 200,000 golfers and visitors each year— we provide an essential space for players of all ages to enjoy the sport. We’re also one of Auckland’s most affordable and accessible golf options.
Losing our 18-hole course would be a massive blow to the community and the game.
We’ve launched a petition urging the council to consider an alternative: integrating stormwater capacity into the existing course design to address flooding while keeping all 18 holes.”
It included a link to a change.org petition which can be found here. The petition currently has nearly 4,500 signatures.
